My long-dormant wings flapped through the air as the ground fell away.

Goddess, how I’d missed this.

The joints were achy, rusty almost. I hadn’t used them in so long. But the further I flew, the higher I ascended, that weariness fell away and a sense of clarity I hadn’t experienced in years fell over me.

I was flying.

I thought I’d never shift again. I thought it was all over for me, that I would live the rest of my life in exile, scraping by a meager existence with odd jobs.

But now I was a dragon once more, and I was leading my people into battle.

A feeling struck me just then, hot and instantaneous like a bolt of lightning.

It was Alec.

He needed me.

I tried to reach out to him, to tell him it would be all right.

Only static. The Link was out of range.

Cursing inwardly, I thought about my little mate I’d left in Lessa’s care. Flashbacks to our night of passion ripped through my mind.

Then all the pieces came together at once.

The way he smelled when we left. The way he’d clung to me, afraid to see me go. The way he’d looked that night, naked and stunning in the throes in his passion.

Alec was pregnant.

And I was a fool.

The thought nearly toppled me out of the sky. Oh, Goddess. He’s pregnant.

It took every ounce of willpower I had not to turn tail and head back to him right this instant. I needed to be there for him. For both of them.

I remembered with great pain Caldo’s pregnancy. The way he grew, the glow it gave him when he laughed. Caldo, my mate, my heart, my everything. He was snatched away too soon, my son never able to meet the world.

I couldn’t let that happen again. Not this time.

I beat my wings harder, ascending above the pack and pulling ahead. I needed space. I needed air.

An unfamiliar emotion washed over me. Fear. Cold, unadulterated fear.

I didn’t know how to bring up a child in this tumultuous world. With Caldo, things were different. Things were simpler then, more peaceful then. But how could I be a good father when my clan was at war? How could I be a good commander, a good mate, and a good father all at the same time?

“Cogs incoming!” The warning cry took me away from my worries and back into the moment.

All of that could wait.

Right now, I had a job to do.

Fire built in my chest as I prepared to let it fly. For my child, I would fight. I would fight until my dying breath if that meant my mate and child could live. I wouldn’t make the same mistake as last time.

I couldn’t.
